If you have spent time in Tahoe, you know the blue. It is hard to miss. On a clear morning, the lake turns a deep, glowing kind of blue you can not find anywhere else. People stop the car. They stand on the shore. They take a photo that never looks as good as the real thing.
That blue is the soul of our Love Blue Collection. This is a small story of where it came from, why it means a lot to us, and how to wear it. It is also a small thank you to every person who has helped keep that blue clean for the next kid to see.
What is the Love Blue Collection?
Love Blue is a core line at California 89. It runs across women’s, men’s, unisex, and kids’ styles. Tees, hoodies, hats, and more. The art is bold but soft. The cuts are easy. The blue itself is the star.
But Love Blue is more than just a color line. It is a small love note. A way for us to say to Tahoe: thank you for being a place worth protecting.
Why blue?
Tahoe blue is a real thing. Scientists who study the lake track its color each year. The deeper and bluer it stays, the cleaner the water is. So that color is not just pretty. It is a sign of a healthy lake. When the blue fades, it means trouble.
The team at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center has tracked this for years. Their work helps shape how the lake is cared for. We follow their reports each year. So should you, if you love this place.
A blue lake is a clean lake. A clean lake is a happy town. A happy town is what we live for. So we paint our shirts that blue and we wear it with pride.
What does “Love Blue” mean to us?
Three things.
Love the lake. Pick up your trash. Stay on trails. Skip the soap in the water. Be kind to the place that lets you have so much fun.
Love the people who care for it. The crews who clean the beach. The science teams. The fund ers. The locals who give time and care all year. They keep this place real.
Love the feeling. That first look at the lake on a clear day. The way the air smells in the trees. The way the sun hits the snow. That feeling is what we try to bottle in each piece.
When you wear Love Blue, you say all three at once. You do not have to explain it. People who know, know.
What does the Love Blue Collection look like?
The line shifts with the season. But there are a few core pieces we always try to keep in stock.
Tees. Soft cotton. Hand drawn art. Easy fit. Both short sleeve and long sleeve.
Hoodies. Cozy and warm. Made for chair lifts and bonfires.
Hats. Six panel and dad style. Both men and women love them.
Stick ers. Cheap and fun. Slap one on a bottle or a bike or a laptop.
Each year, we add a few new prints. Some sell out fast and never come back. So if you see one you love, grab it. Your future self will thank you.

Who is the Love Blue Collection for?
Honest answer. Any one who loves Tahoe.
That means: - Locals who want to wear their home without shouting. - Visitors who want a real Tahoe piece, not a cheesy one. - Folks who do not live near the lake but feel a pull to it. - Kids who grow up in the snow and the pines. - Friends who plan one big trip a year and want to bring it home.
We see Love Blue tees on toddlers. On grandmas. On bike racers. On the river guides. On the chef at our favorite coffee shop. That mix is the whole point. The lake belongs to all of us. So does the shirt.
How do you style Love Blue pieces?
The blue is loud in a good way. So the rest can be calm. Here are a few easy looks.
For a spring trail day
Love Blue tee
Light gray hoodie
Dark green or tan shorts
Trail runners
A hat from our hats and beanies page
For a town day in Truckee
Love Blue long sleeve
Dark jeans
White sneakers
Top it with a denim jacket if it is cool
For a sum mer night by the lake
Love Blue tee
Linen pants
A cotton crewneck for when the sun goes down
Bare feet, if you can swing it
For a kid on a school day
Kids Love Blue tee
Soft sweatpants
Light up shoes (because why not)
You see the pattern. The blue does the work. You just keep the rest simple.
What makes our blue different?
We test a lot of dyes. Most blues fade fast. Most blues turn green or gray after ten washes. We hate that. So we work with our print partners to find a blue that holds. It is not cheap. But it is worth it.
A good Love Blue tee should last years. Many of our customers tell us their first Love Blue tee from five seasons ago is still in the rotation. That is the best thing we can hear.
How do you care for a Love Blue tee?
Easy steps to make it last: - Wash cold. Always. - Turn it inside out. - Skip the high heat dry. Hang it if you can. - Skip the bleach. Of course.
Do that and the blue will stay deep for a long time. Plus you save power. Plus the shirt holds shape. Win win win.
How does Love Blue tie back to Tahoe?
Each year, we give back to groups that protect the lake and the moun tains. We are proud supporters of Mountain Area Preservation and the Tahoe Fund. When you buy from California 89, a small part of that goes back to the place that started us.
It is not a flashy program. It is just a small steady piece of who we are. Love the place. Pay it back. Re peat each year. Year after year, those small bits add up.
How do I get the Love Blue look in my home too?
Glad you asked. Tahoe blue is great on a t-shirt. It is also great on a wall, a pillow, or a mug. Our sis ter shop, CA89 Home, has a few small home pieces that lean into the same blue feeling. A handmade bowl. A soft throw. A frame for the lake photo from your last trip. Use the same color story in your house and on your back. The whole thing flows.
What is coming next?
We add new Love Blue pieces each season. Spring brings light tees. Summer brings tanks and hats. Fall brings long sleeves. Winter brings deep hoodies and beanies. Sign up for our newsletter at the California 89 home page to see drops first. Or stop by the Truckee store and see them in real life.
Are the Love Blue tees made for both warm and cold days?
Yes. That is the whole point. The line is built to wear all year. The cotton is light enough for a hot July day on a paddle board. But it is also soft enough to layer under a hoodie in March. A few of our long sleeve Love Blue styles work great as a base under a ski shell too.
One tee. Four seasons. That is the dream of any Tahoe local. Less stuff in the closet. More time on the trail or the lake.
What if I do not live near Tahoe?
You can still wear Love Blue with pride. We ship across the country. Some of our biggest fans live in places far from the Sierra. They wear the line as a kind of memory. A small piece of a place they love. Every time they put on the tee, they think of a trip. Or a friend. Or a quiet morning by the water.
That is what good apparel does. It carries a feeling with you, even when you are far from home.
A small note from our team
We are a small family shop. Female owned. Locally drawn. Made in a town we love. Each Love Blue piece comes from real care. Real hands. Real Tahoe love.
When you wear it, you carry a piece of this lake with you. We hope it makes you smile every time you put it on.
And when you come back to Tahoe, we hope the blue is still there to greet you. That is the whole goal. Every day. For every kid. For ever.
That is what Love Blue means.
Thanks for being a part of it.
